This is the blog of Kyle DeCicco-Carey. I am looking to combine my interests of local history and baseball history and form a vintage base ball club. Currently the attempts to form the club are at a stand still. I have a few committed people but not enough to get the club off the ground.
I am slowly doing research on baseball in the New Bedford area. As I make discoveries I will post them here from time to time. When I started the research my sense was that baseball in the area has a history earlier than the post Civil War founding of the Wamsutta Club. As early as 1822 New Bedford prohibited people who “play at ball” in such a way to cause an interference with the public. I have found playing baseball in New Bedford to be first specifically mentioned in 1858. My hope is to expand the research in to the surrounding communities and promote local baseball history throughout the south coast of Massachusetts.
